Edward was born on August 30th, 1845 in Bury and his baptism took place on October 5th, 1845 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Bury).1 2  Edward's father was Samuel Mather and his mother was Ann Butterworth.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Evans. He had two brothers and five sisters, named James, Alfred, Elizabeth, Sarah, Mary, Alice and Leah.  He was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
