James was born on February 3rd, 1838 in Bury and his baptism took place on March 18th, 1838 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Bury).1 2  James' father was Samuel Mather and his mother was Ann Butterworth.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Evans. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Edward, Alfred, Elizabeth, Sarah, Mary, Alice and Leah.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.  He died at 3 months old in May 1838 in Bury.  He was buried on May 25th, 1838 at St. John (Bury).3 4
