Mary's father was Samuel Mather and her mother was Ann Butterworth.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Evans. She had three brothers and four sisters, named James, Edward, Alfred, Elizabeth, Sarah, Alice and Leah.  She was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
