Leah was born in April 1850 in Heap and her baptism took place on September 8th, 1850 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Bury).1 2  Leah's father was Samuel Mather and her mother was Ann Butterworth.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Evans. She had three brothers and four sisters, named James, Edward, Alfred, Elizabeth, Sarah, Mary and Alice.  She was the second youngest of the eight children.
