Alfred was born in October 1854 in Bury.1  Alfred's father was Samuel Mather and his mother was Ann Butterworth.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Evans. He had two brothers and five sisters, named James, Edward, Elizabeth, Sarah, Mary, Alice and Leah.  He was the youngest of the eight children.  He died at 2 months old in December 1854 in Bury.  He was buried in 1854 in Bury.1 1
