Mary was born on October 29th, 1815 in Redvales and her baptism took place on December 8th, 1815 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Bury).1  Mary's father was Francis Mather and her mother was Margaret Horrocks.  Her paternal grandparents were Francis Mather and Elizabeth Chadwick. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Samuel, John, Elizabeth, Martha, Margaret and Ann.  She was the oldest of the seven children.
