Martha was born on July 30th, 1820 in Redvales and her baptism took place on September 8th, 1820 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Bury).1  Martha's father was Francis Mather and her mother was Margaret Horrocks.  Her paternal grandparents were Francis Mather and Elizabeth Chadwick. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Samuel, John, Mary, Elizabeth, Margaret and Ann.  She was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
