Margaret was born on July 27th, 1823 in Bury and her baptism took place on August 20th, 1823 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Bury).1  Margaret's father was Francis Mather and her mother was Margaret Horrocks.  Her paternal grandparents were Francis Mather and Elizabeth Chadwick. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Samuel, John, Mary, Elizabeth, Martha and Ann.  She was the third youngest of the seven children.

‌Margaret and Robert were married in a religious ceremony on August 12th, 1850 in Prestwich.2
