Mary was born in 1816 in WestLeigh and her baptism took place on January 21st, 1816 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).1  Mary's father was Henry Mather and her mother was Alice Boardman.  Her paternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Betty Keele. She had two brothers and three sisters, named John, Henry, Betty, Ann and Hannah.  She was the third oldest of the six children.
