Mary's father was Solomon Mather and her mother was Jane Scowcroft. Her paternal grandparents were Solomon Mather and Mary (Mally) Grime. She had a brother and seven sisters, named Samuel, Elizabeth, Alice, Martha, Nancy, Margaret, Mary and Rachel. She was the second oldest of the nine children.
