Margaret was born in 1846 in Whitefield and her baptism took place on March 15th, 1846 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1 2  Margaret's father was Robert Mather and her mother was Alice Whitworth.  Her paternal grandparents were Jesse Mather and Hannah Emmerson. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Jesse, Richard, Nancy, Eliza and Mary.  She was the third youngest of the six children. She had two half-sisters named Sarah and Elizabeth.

‌Margaret and Matthew were married in a religious ceremony on November 10th, 1867 at All Saints (Stand) by Curate Richard K Corser and witnessed by Nathan Mather & Eliza Mather.3
