Sarah was born in March 1853 in Whitefield.1  Sarah's father was Robert Mather and her mother was Mary Ann Pickstones.  Her paternal grandparents were Jesse Mather and Hannah Emmerson. She had a sister named Elizabeth.  She was the older of the two children. She had two half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Jesse, Richard, Nancy, Eliza, Margaret and Mary.
