Mary was born in September 1850 in Whitefield and her baptism took place on October 20th, 1850 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1 2  Mary's father was Robert Mather and her mother was Alice Whitworth.  Her paternal grandparents were Jesse Mather and Hannah Emmerson. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Jesse, Richard, Nancy, Eliza and Margaret.  She was the youngest of the six children. She had two half-sisters named Sarah and Elizabeth.
