Joseph was born in January 1764 in Pennington and his baptism took place on January 28th, 1764 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).1  Joseph's father was Henry Mather and his mother was Mary Hampson. He had four sisters named Sarah, Sally, Ann and Mary.  He was the third oldest of the five children. He had three half-brothers and a half-sister, named John, James, Henry and Peggy.
