John was born in November 1777 in Pennington and his baptism took place on November 23rd, 1777 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).1  John's father was Henry Mather and his mother was Betty Keele. He had two brothers and a sister, named James, Henry and Peggy.  He was the oldest of the four children. He had a half-brother and four half-sisters, named Joseph, Sarah, Sally, Ann and Mary.
