John's father was John James Mather and his mother was Agnes Jackson. His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ellen Mort. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Joseph, James, James, Harry, Ethel, Gertrude, Esther, Edith and Agnes. He was the third oldest of the ten children.
