Gertrude's father was John James Mather and her mother was Agnes Jackson. Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ellen Mort. She had five brothers and four sisters, named John, Joseph, James, James, Harry, Ethel, Esther, Edith and Agnes. She was the second oldest of the ten children.
