James was born in September 1894 in Tyldesley.1  James' father was John James Mather and his mother was Agnes Jackson.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ellen Mort. He had four brothers and five sisters, named John, Joseph, James, Harry, Ethel, Gertrude, Esther, Edith and Agnes.  He was the sixth oldest of the ten children.
