Esther's father was John James Mather and her mother was Agnes Jackson.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ellen Mort. She had five brothers and four sisters, named John, Joseph, James, James, Harry, Ethel, Gertrude, Edith and Agnes.  She was the fourth youngest of the ten children.  She died at the age of 4 in December 1900 in Tyldesley.¹
