John was born in September 1859 in Atherton and his baptism took place on January 1st, 1860 at St. George (Tyldesley).1 2  John's father was John Mather and his mother was Ellen Mort.  His paternal grandparents were <unknown> and Jane Mather; his maternal grandparents were John Mort and Ann Mort. He had two brothers and a sister, named James, Thomas and Mary.  He was the youngest of the four children. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Edward, James, Mary and Eliza.  He died at the age of 73 in January 1933 in Leigh.3
