Mary was born in September 1850 in Atherton.1  Mary's father was John Mather and her mother was Ellen Mort.  Her paternal grandparents were <unknown> and Jane Mather; her maternal grandparents were John Mort and Ann Mort. She had three brothers named James, Thomas and John.  She was the second oldest of the four children. She had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Edward, James, Mary and Eliza.
