Edith was born in December 1897 in Tyldesley.1  Edith's father was John James Mather and her mother was Agnes Jackson.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ellen Mort. She had five brothers and four sisters, named John, Joseph, James, James, Harry, Ethel, Gertrude, Esther and Agnes.  She was the third youngest of the ten children.
