James was born in September 1892 in Tyldesley.1  James' father was John James Mather and his mother was Agnes Jackson.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ellen Mort. He had four brothers and five sisters, named John, Joseph, James, Harry, Ethel, Gertrude, Esther, Edith and Agnes.  He was the fifth oldest of the ten children.  He died in September 1892 in Tyldesley.1
