Jane was born in December 1818 in Little Bolton and her baptism took place on January 3rd, 1819 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  Jane's father was John (Mechanic) Mather and her mother was Ann Thompson. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, John, John, Thomas, Martha and Ellen.  Joseph and Jane were twins. She had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named Thomas, Betty and Sarah.
