James was born in September 1826 in WestLeigh and his baptism took place on September 23rd, 1826 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).1 2  James' father was John Mather and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) France.  His paternal grandparents were Nathan Mather and Betty Green. He had two brothers and two sisters, named John, John, Jane and Ann.  He was the youngest of the five children.  He died at the age of 22 in November 1848 in Tottington.  He was buried on November 28th, 1848 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Bury).3 4
