John was born in 1815 in Atherton and his baptism took place there on January 29th, 1815.1  John's father was John Mather and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) France.  His paternal grandparents were Nathan Mather and Betty Green. He had two brothers and two sisters, named John, James, Jane and Ann.  He was the second oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 1 in April 1816 in WestLeigh.  He was buried on April 23rd, 1816 in Atherton.2
