John was born in 1817 in Blackrod and his baptism took place there on November 16th, 1817.1  John's father was James Makinson and his mother was Betty Mather.  His maternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Entwistle. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Hugh, Nicholas, George, George, Richard, Mary, Ann, Elizabeth and Alice.  He was the third oldest of the ten children.
