Giles' father was Andrew Low and his mother was Rachel Mather. His maternal grandparents were James Mather and Susanna (Susan) Whalley. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Andrew, James, Fred, Edith, Susan and Jane. He was the second youngest of the seven children.
