Lawrence's father was Jonathan Isherwood and his mother was Margaret Bentley.  His paternal grandparents were William Isherwood and Mary Hardman. He had three brothers and nine sisters, named William, Jonathan, Henry, Jane, Mary, Ann, Sarah, Margaret, Selina, Rachel, Louisa and Martha.  He was the fourth oldest of the thirteen children.
