William's father was Jonathan Isherwood and his mother was Margaret Bentley. His paternal grandparents were William Isherwood and Mary Hardman. He had three brothers and nine sisters, named Lawrence, Jonathan, Henry, Jane, Mary, Ann, Sarah, Margaret, Selina, Rachel, Louisa and Martha. He was the third oldest of the thirteen children.
