Jane was born in March 1843 in Turton.1  Jane's father was Jonathan Isherwood and her mother was Margaret Bentley.  Her paternal grandparents were William Isherwood and Mary Hardman. She had four brothers and eight sisters, named William, Lawrence, Jonathan, Henry, Mary, Ann, Sarah, Margaret, Selina, Rachel, Louisa and Martha.  She was the oldest of the thirteen children.
