Mary's father was John Evans (Whitall) and her mother was Elizabeth Eddowes. Her paternal grandparents were Evan Evans and Jane Jones; her maternal grandparents were John Eddowes and Mary Whitfield. She had three brothers and a sister, named John, Richard, Charles and Rosanna. She was the oldest of the five children.
