Charles' father was John Evans (Whitall) and his mother was Elizabeth Eddowes. His paternal grandparents were Evan Evans and Jane Jones; his maternal grandparents were John Eddowes and Mary Whitfield. He had two brothers and two sisters, named John, Richard, Mary and Rosanna. He was the youngest of the five children.
