John was born in April 1861 in Birkenhead and his baptism took place there on May 30th, 1861.1 2  John's father was John Eddowes and his mother was Phoebe Parry.  His paternal grandparents were John Eddowes and Mary Whitfield; his maternal grandparents were John Parry and Martha Dutton. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Albert, George, Martha, Mary, Emily, Clara and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the eight children.  He died at 9 months old in January 1862 in Birkenhead.3
