John's father was Randle (Robert) Dod-Hopley and his mother was Mariane (Mary Ann) Broomfield. His paternal grandparents were Robert Dod-Hopley and Ann Hopley. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Robert, Charles, John, William, Mary and Mary. He was the second youngest of the seven children.
