Nellie's father was Clifford Davies and her mother was Alice Ann Thorpe. Her maternal grandparents were Robert Thorpe and Nancy Mather. She had two brothers and three sisters, named George, Thomas, Florrie, Alice and Ethel. She was the fifth oldest of the six children.
