Daniel's father was James Crompton and his mother was Margaret Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Ann Marsden. He had five brothers and two sisters, named James, Miles, Ellias, Richard, Benjamin, Mary and Ann.  He was the youngest of the eight children.  He died in September 1868 in Great Lever.¹
