John's father was James (John) Clutton and his mother was Mary Ann Eddowes.  His maternal grandparents were John Eddowes and Mary Whitfield. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, James, William, Mary, Lucy and Eleanor.  He was the third oldest of the seven children. He had a half-sister named Mary.  He died at the age of 4 in February 1862 in Caca Duton.  He was buried on February 23rd, 1862 in Holt.¹
