Thomas was born about 1825 in Bolton.1   Thomas' father was Richard Clarkson and his mother was Mary Rainford. He had four brothers and three sisters, named William, Peter, Robert, Joseph, Susannah, Jane and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.
