Joseph was born in January 1841 in Bolton.1  Joseph's father was Richard Clarkson and his mother was Mary Rainford. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, William, Peter, Robert, Susannah, Jane and Mary.  He was the seventh oldest of the eight children.
