Mary's father was Cornelius Buckley and her mother was Esther (Eliza) Scowcroft. Her paternal grandparents were John Buckley and Mary Crook. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, Josiah, Ephriam, Martha and Sarah. She was the third oldest of the six children. She had three half-brothers named James, William and Squire. Her burial was at St. Stephens (E Bolton).²
