Joseph's father was Jonathan Buckley and his mother was Mary Webster. His paternal grandparents were John Buckley and Mary Crook. He had four brothers and four sisters, named William, John, Benjamin, Levi, Hannah, Ellen, Mary and Sarah. He was the fifth oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 75 in October 1918 in Bolton.
