Mary was born in 1870 in Victoria (Au).

Mary's father was George Brereton and her mother was Sarah James Lea. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Brereton and Martha Hughes; her maternal grandparents were William Lea and Jane Stubbs. She had five brothers and a sister, named William, Charles, Harry, George, John and Jane. She was the youngest of the seven children. She died in 1870 in Victoria (Au).
