Joseph's father was John Brereton and his mother was Jane Harrison. He had nine sisters named Elizabeth, Hannah, Mary, Elizabeth, Harriet, Jane, Martha, Sarah and Ann.  He was the fourth oldest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 37 in August 1835 in Macclesfield.  He was buried on August 23rd, 1835 in Gawsworth.¹
