Emma was born in 1848 in Astbury.1  Emma's father was William Brereton and her mother was Mary Stanyer.  Her paternal grandparents were Randle Brereton and Sarah Buckley. She had six brothers and four sisters, named Randle, William, Randle, Abraham, James, George, Hannah, Sarah, Mary and Annie.  She was the third youngest of the eleven children.
