James was born in 1845 in Astbury. James' father was William Brereton and his mother was Mary Stanyer.  His paternal grandparents were Randle Brereton and Sarah Buckley. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Randle, William, Randle, Abraham, George, Hannah, Sarah, Mary, Emma and Annie.  He was the fourth youngest of the eleven children.  He died in February 1845 in Astbury.  He was buried on February 15th, 1845 in Astbury.1 2
