Richard was born in June 1839 in Bolton and his baptism took place on March 31st, 1839 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  Richard's father was William Booth and his mother was Jane Rostron.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Booth and Alice Scowcroft; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Rostron and Mary Holt. He had four brothers and three sisters, named James, Thomas, John, William, Mary, Alice and Elizabeth.  He was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
