Sarah's father was Thomas Bolton and her mother was Mary Whitaker. She had three brothers and five sisters, named John, Richard, Abraham, Grace, Maria, Ann, Mary and Maria. She was the fourth oldest of the nine children. She died at the age of 71 in September 1877 in Bolton. Her burial was on September 30th, 1877 at Tonge-with-Haulgh Cemetery.²³

- Sarah probably married either Philip Banks (30 Sep 1827) or Thomas Piklington (2 Jan 1828) or George Thomas (15 Dec 1834). A DNA match to Grant Brindley, son of Keith Hart with three shared matches supports the marriage to Philip Banks.
