John's father was Edmund Bolton and his mother was Mary Davenport. He had five brothers and six sisters, named James, Robert, Sarah, Edmund, John, Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, Hannah, Nancy and Dolly.  He was the second oldest of the twelve children.  He died at the age of 13 in December 1799 in Bolton.  He was buried on December 13th, 1799 at St. Peter's (Bolton).²
