John was born in November 1801 in Harwood and his baptism took place on November 15th, 1801 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  John's father was Edmund Bolton and his mother was Mary Davenport. He had five brothers and six sisters, named John, James, Robert, Sarah, Edmund, Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, Hannah, Nancy and Dolly.  He was the tenth oldest of the twelve children.
